Hose size VS Gpm

Improper hose size is a common mistake when a system is designed.  Using undersized hoses can result in pump cavitation, back pressure, excessive heat, and component failure.

Keep in mind this chart shows recommended velocities, there are other factors that may affect your system.  For instance a flooded inlet on your pump (pump is mounted below the oil level of your hydraulic reservoir) will help reduce the amount of vacuum generated by your pump as gravity will help push the oil into the inlet.  Likewise, things such shorter hoses and lack of elbow adapters will help reduce the effects of undersized hoses.

Maximum recommended velocities are as follows.

Suction lines (hose between the reservoir and pump) should not exceed 4 feet per second.
Pressure and Return (any pressure or return hoses) should not exceed 15 feet per second.

NOT RECOMMENDED (not recommended) flows in excess of 15 feet per second are not recommened.

The following chart shows oil velocity in relation to Gallons Per Minute within a hose.

Recommendation for oils having a maximum viscosity of 315 S.S.U at 100 degrees F, operating at temperatures between 65 and 155 degrees F.
